It’s an understandable mistake, given how video marketing has evolved over the years.
Well those changes didn’t happen all at once, and or in every industry at the same time.
Back in the good ol’ days, videos were basically a “hack” for getting search engine rankings and traffic to your website. The videos didn’t even need to be that good.
You can probably guess what happened next…
A gold rush ensued, with countless videographers (both good and bad) setting up shop and making YouTube videos to drive traffic and leads. Many of them are still in business today, preaching the same gospel (and creating the same videos), all despite the fact that those strategies don’t work anymore…at least not for most businesses.
When YouTube celebrity Shay Carl was asked if he thought he could replicate his success if he were starting from scratch today, he said “no.”
Here’s a guy who sold his video production studio to DISNEY, and he doesn’t think he could do it again today, because the competition is so much greater.
It seems like all video marketers want to talk about is how video helps drive traffic and generate leads.
But not me.
Sure, video can still work at the top-of-the-funnel, but only if you already have a large audience to share and promote your videos. Starting from scratch using this strategy is expensive, risky, and could take months before you see ROI.
For me, that’s not an acceptable strategy to propose to clients anymore. My team and I are very competitive and we only want to hit home runs. The only metric that matters is ROI.
And you shouldn’t have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars or wait 9+ months to know your video strategy is working.
